To shop safely online, you need to be sure that
  • the website is genuine
  • The site is secure (look out for the padlock symbol or ‘https” in the browser. This means the site is encrypted. In particular never submit payment details on a non-secure website)
  • the vendor can be contacted if something goes wrong with your order.
Checking for genuine websites

If you haven’t shopped from a retailer before do a bit of research before you hand over your payment details.

Check out things a reputable dealer would normally include such as
  • a physical address
  • terms and conditions, including return policies, shipping costs (cancellation policies when booking services)
  • the language and design (typos are a warning sign)
  • a URL that matches the company name
  • realistic prices/bargains. (If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is
  • you don’t find critical reviews
Before providing payment details, check that
  • The retailor is using a secure connection. This is indicated with a padlock symbol or “ https://” rather than a “http://”. next to the URL in your browser. Both of these indicate that the connection is encrypted so that your information cannot be copied by third parties.
  • You can use trusted payment systems, like PayPal, instead of being asked to supply or something like that payment details in an email.
  • Negative online consumer feedback and reviews. These offer clues about a company’s reputation.
Final tips
  • Google the supplier to make sure there are no complaints about the vendor out there from dissatisfied customers
  • Make sure you are using a safe wifi connection, such as you home or your phone account wifi. Do no use public wifi for such transactions.
  • Make sure you use a strong unique password when setting up your account, and add 2 factor authentication for an extra layer of safety
  • Pay with a credit card or use a respected payment service such as paypal, apple pay or google wallet. Paying with a credit card gives you better protection than a debit card, since most credit cards provide insurance for online purchases. If something goes wrong you can get the money reversed to your account.
  • Be careful about what information you provide. It makes sense that a site would require your address, email and phone number, but not information such as the name of your favourite pet or other such personal information.
  • Unless you will be using a site a lot, it is safer to check out as a guest rather than create an account allowing them to store your data.
  • Many sites ask if you want them to save your payment details. This can be tempting, but less safe if they are hacked.
  • If something goes wrong, report it immediately to the police.
