Identity theft

Photos and other data can be used to misrepresent you. Personal information can often be used to access your accounts, or steal your identity. Organisations may sell your data to others for advertising purposes. You don’t know to whom.

Once someone gains access to your account they can impersonate you, for example by setting up a fake account in your name (possibly even one that can be used to apply for ID or other documents in your name).

What to do:
  • If you become aware of anyone impersonating you, report it immediately, including to any platform it might appear on. You might also want to put a notification on your real social media platform warning others of the false profile.
